Increasing demand for qualified translators

According to an article published by The Enquirer, there are an estimated 25,310 translators and interpreters working in the United States. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says they are earning an average of 36,500 USD a year, which corresponds to 17.55 USD an hour.

The American Translators Association (ATA) estimates that the average income was closer to 50,000 USD and that the overall industry was worth about 11 billion USD. Certification is not a requirement for working as a translator but being certified leads to a higher income as the figures provided by the ATA suggest.

"Demand for foreign language translators and interpreters has grown as corporations, schools and government agencies recognize the importance of effectively communicating with a diverse population and global marketplace."
