Bulgaria Ponders Unified Cyrillic Transliteration

Bulgaria is to work out a unified system of transliterating Bulgarian proper names into Latin alphabet.

With its upcoming accession into the EU, the Balkan country will contribute a brand new alphabet into the Union. However, its practical usage poses the threat of many confusions and variations in transcribing Bulgarian names with Latin letter, minister of state administration said.

Nikolay Vassilev introduced Wednesday the project "Understandable Bulgaria", which would be implemented along with broad public debates on the best manner to Latin-equalised Bulgarian proper names.

In his words, the new system would facilitate the communication of Bulgaria with the rest of the world.

The project envisions also the active cooperation on the side of letters experts and linguists, scientists and media, Minister Vassilev said.

The initiative is organised by the State Adminstration and Administrative Reform Ministry and the Bulgarian Language Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
