For all of those who do not have September, 26 marked as a special day in their calendars there is an event worth mentioning: the European Day of Languages, initiated by the Council of Europe.

According to analysis there are 40 official languages spoken throughout Europe. In the light of this linguistic diversity and due to the fact that lanugage is closely linked to cultural identity, the importance of which EU organisations constantly emphasize, the establishment of a day “celebrating linguistic diversity, plurilingualism and lifelong language lerning” is not surprising.

A calendar of events, scheduled for the week of September 26 to October 2, is available at www.ecml.at. Of special interest for translators might be the International Translation Day celebrated on September 30 in Ireland.

More information about the European Day of Languages can be found at http://www.ecml.at/edl/.
