The new version leverages many of the features that were released in Alchemy CATALYST 8.0. Enhancements

• SP2 of SDL Trados Studio features a new product edition called “Starter”. SDL Trados Studio Starter users can work with project packages from the Professional edition and the Enterprise translation management systems and can also translate single documents in all supported file types with a limited translation memory size. • SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 now supports the following package formats from the following SDL Enterprise translation management systems: SDL WorldServer 9.2, SDL TeamWorks 2008 (all releases) and SDL TMS 2007 (all releases).
• SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2 supports two new automated translation systems: Google Translate and Language Weaver. Both can be used in addition to SDL’s Automated Translation solution.
• The following file types have been added in SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2: IDML (InDesign Markup Language saved by Adobe InDesign CS 4), QuarkXPress (as saved CopyFlow from www.napsys.com) and XHTML. SDL recommends that you use the new IDML filter instead of the legacy INX filter for optimum performance. The INX filter has also been updated for more robust handling of large files. It can now split large INX files and merge them back together in the background to avoid out of memory issues. You can find the new INX file processing settings under Tools - Options -  File Types - Adobe InDesign CS2-CS4 INX - File processing.
• SP2 features a new on-demand internal preview for Microsoft PowerPoint documents.
• SP2 features an updated file type filter for Microsoft Excel. The new filter converts Microsoft Excel 2000-2003 files (.xls) to Microsoft Excel 2007 documents (.xlsx) on-the-fly and back again to Microsoft Excel 2000-2003 (.xls) after translation. This speeds up the conversion for Microsoft Excel 2000-2003 documents significantly. For this new file type to work correctly, the following applies:
  • On machines with Microsoft Excel 2000-2003 installed, install the Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility pack available from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads. This will ensure that SDL Trados Studio 2009 can do the on-the-fly conversion. If the compatibility pack is not installed, the previous, slower Microsoft Excel 2000-2003 filter will be used.
  • On machines with Microsoft Excel 2007 installed, you do not need to do anything, the conversion will happen in the background.
• The documentation set has been enhanced significantly. There are three new Quick Start Guides for translation, project management and translation memory management. The new documents can be found in the SDL Trados Studio Start menu program group under Documentation > Quick Start Guides.
• SDL Trados Studio now features AutoUpdate allowing you to automatically download and install any hotfixes and patches.
• During analysis, it is now possible to activate or deactivate counting repetitions across files in a project where you are sending files for translation to several users. It is also possible to count fuzzy repetitions and not only 100% match repetitions. The Analyze Files reports have been updated accordingly.
• The Analyze Files reports contains a new column called Tags in addition to the previously available Placeables column. The placeable count continues to include the total number of all placeable elements, including tags, numbers, dates etc. while the tags count includes a separate count for tags only. Among other things, this allows you to calculate the number of numbers/dates etc. vs. the number of tags in the Placeable count. You achieve this by calculating the placeable minus the tag count. For instance, if the report indicates 50 placeables and 30 tags, this means that there are 20 non-tag elements in the placeable count such as numbers, dates and measurements.
• The AutoPropagate feature in SDL Trados Studio now also supports autopropagating fuzzy matches and not only 100% matches.
• Several enhancements have been implemented in the area of autosubstitution and autolocalization of numbers, dates and times. For instance, it is now possible to customize the space character used between numbers and measurement units, as well as switch off the automatic substitution of such elements on a project-by-project basis.
• Performance in batch processing has been enhanced.
• Find and replace operations now run significantly faster, and a new Find Next feature has been implemented.

Bug Fixes

• The toolbar positions in SDL Trados Studio are now kept between sessions.
• Issues with wrongly autopropagated numbers and other placeable elements have been addressed.
• When working with multiple termbases, any terms found in the second or third termbase are now displayed as well,  adding to the terms found in the default termbase.
• The error “Cannot deserialize segmentation rules” should no longer occur.
• Out of memory issues during the creation of AutoSuggest dictionaries based on very large translation memories can now be avoided. To achieve this, users can set the value of translation units to be processed prior to starting the AutoSuggest dictionary creation process.
• Issues with spell checking complex languages (such as Arabic and Thai) have been addressed. Also some of the dictionaries (such as Portuguese (Portugal)) have been updated.
• Reference files in TMS packages now load correctly in SDL Trados Studio.
• Fixes in the Microsoft Word .doc and .docx filter:
  • Incorrect characters are no longer inserted into Microsoft Word .doc-based SDLXLIFF files.
  • Special characters in field contents are now correctly processed when working with Microsoft Word files.
• Fixes in the FrameMaker MIF filter:
  • The source language now gets changed to the current target language in finalized FrameMaker MIF documents.
  • Hidden conditional text in tables is no longer extracted incorrectly.
• Fixes in the Microsoft Excel XLSX filter:
  • In rare cases,  workbook content got damaged or lost in target files. This issue no longer occurs.
  • Content from shape objects is now extracted for translation.
• Fixes in the Microsoft PowerPoint PPTX filter:
  • Files with textboxes left untranslated and empty can now still be saved as target.
• Fixes in the XML filter:
  • Issues with CDATA sections in XML documents have been addressed.
• Several other issues have been addressed throughout all file types (XLIFF, PDF etc.).
